The discussion centered around the questions of whether and "how digital technology can improve democracy and governance." "What are the obstacles, advantages, and challenges? How can we overcome them?"
The panelists included Marco Aquaticci (Deputy Head of Mission of the German Embassy in Skopje), Rijat Abdullai (IT expert and lecturer at SEEU Skopje), Petar Antevski (youth activist, Youth Educational Forum and youth radio, Radio MOF), and Zoran Richliev (journalist with the Balkan Investigative Reporters Network (BIRN) -- moderated by Sefer Selimi, the Founder and CEO of the NGO Democracy Lab.
The Founder and CEO of DemocracyLab (Sefer Selimi) is a US Exchange Alumnus -- he was part of the Community Solution Program, a leadership program of the US Department of State, implemented by IREX.
I was pleased that through this conference I met two Peace Corps Volunteers working in Tetovo. I am looking forward to learning more about their work - and possibly working with them (and DemocracyLab?) to organize a civic engagement project for my "Democracy and Civil Society" class.
